Things To Do Thanksgiving Weekend In Chicago

The colder months of the year brings freezing snowstorms, icy roads, and overpriced coats. Albeit, the low temperatures can bring down one’s jolly spirits, have no fear, there are plenty of wonderful festivities that will keep a smile plastered on your face.

Celebrating Thanksgiving in the Windy City is the perfect holiday getaway due to the numerous events it hosts. Suburban towns surrounding Chicago and the city itself offer activities for people of all ages. The best part is that many of these events are free or relatively inexpensive. Who doesn’t love saving a few bucks during the holiday season?

Here are a couple of ideas on how to spend Thanksgiving this year.

1. Thanksgiving Parade
This free parade happens every year in the heart of Downtown. The parade is a highlight of the holiday season. The event starts at 8 am on November 22nd. The route starts at State St. from Congress and ends at Randolph St. This family-friendly event will feature floats, marching bands, and performances from local organizations. Of course, you could watch it on TV, but what’s the fun in that?

2. Lincoln Park’s Zoolights
Lincoln Park Zoo offers a three-month-long event that offers festivities throughout the holiday season. This free event begins November 23rd at 4:25 pm. The zoo offers a beautiful light display, ice sculptures, Candy Cane Lane, and more. This is mainly tailored towards families and younger children, but Lincoln Park Zoo offers nights just for adults. 3. Ice Skating at the Maggie Daley Park
Admission to skate is free but if you want to rent out skates they cost $15 on holidays and Fridays through Sundays. If you go during the week, ice skates only cost $13. If you want to save money, you can buy your own skates. On Thanksgiving Day, the operating hours are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Think about how lovely it would be to ice skate along the backdrop of the city skyline.

4. Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony
Every year the city of Chicago has an annual tree lighting ceremony in Millennium Park. On November 16th, Chicagoans and visitors alike will witness the tree being ignited by holiday lights. The months leading up to the ceremony, the city chooses a tree that will serve as the city’s “official” Christmas Tree.

5. Christkindlmarket
This open market is arguably one of the best events of the year in the Midwest. The market is free to walk through, though it’s definitely recommended to bring spending cash. This European inspired market allows Midwesterners to experience this German tradition. Vendors sell foods, antiques, and gifts to the public.
